The familiar profile of feminist icon Susan B. Anthony is labeled plainly: Another anti-choice fanatic.
These are hardly the words of an advocate for abortion rights. Yet they are indeed the words of Susan B. Anthony.
When pressed with Anthony's opposition to abortion, abortion advocates will generally mutter something about women's safety being Anthony's concern. But if that is so, why would she refer to abortion as "child murder?"
And why would she refer to abortion as a "crime?"
"Guilty? Yes. No matter what the motive, love of ease, or a desire to save from suffering the unborn innocent, the woman is awfully guilty who commits the deed. It will burden her conscience in life, it will burden her soul in death; But oh, thrice guilty is he who drove her to the desperation which impelled her to the crime!"
And here we have it in a nutshell: Feminist icon Susan B. Anthony considered abortion to be a crime, the murder of a child. She saw it as an act of desperation. And she saw that truly free women would not be driven to such an act.
The real message of Susan B. Anthony is brought to college students by Feminists For Life as part of their Question AbortionTM outreach campaign.
"The woman who fought for the right to vote also fought for the right to life. We proudly continue her legacy."
Anthony was a voice crying in the wilderness in her own era. In ours, her voice is silenced by those who wish to use her image but not her ideals.
Question abortion. It's an imperative, now more than ever.
