Patient Y, whom I'll refer to as "Yvette," responding to an ad for a free pregnancy test, arrived at Hempstead Medical Polyclinic on February 25, 1985. She had been suffering dizziness, motion sickness, and weight gain. She had not menstruated since January 10.

Two women in white uniforms requested a urine specimen, which Yvette left in a cup in the restroom as instructed. She was instructed to call later for the results.

Yvette called as instructed, and was told that she was "definitely pregnant." Yvette was "really thrilled." Yvette was in her mid-30's, had no children, and wanted very much to have a baby. She sought obstetric care through her union, and got an appointment for February 28.

She was examined by the obstetrician, who also performed a urine pregnancy test. Both the test and examination did not find a pregnancy. The obstetrician told Yvette to return with an early morning specimen for another pregnancy test, but this second test was likewise negative.

Yvette was very confused. She called Hempstead and spoke with Comeau-Samuel, who quoted a $50 price for an examination, offered a pregnancy test, and quoted a $150 price for an abortion. Yvette indicated that she didn't want an abortion; she wanted to have a baby. Nevertheless, she returned to Hempstead March 1, leaving a urine specimen for another pregnancy test.

She called for the results, and was again told that her pregnancy test was positive.

Yvette continued to fell unwell, with motion sickness, heart palpitation, and no menstruation. Her union arranged an appointment with an internist who examined Yvette and performed many tests including a pregnancy test. Yvette was not pregnant, but was actually suffering from hyperthyroidism. The internist prescribed proper medication for Yvette, and her menstruation resumed.
