Late Abortion Lies: The Anesthesia Kills the Fetus

A "fact sheet" prepared by Planned Parenthood for Congress in consideration of the partial birth abortion ban said, "The fetus dies of an overdose of anesthesia given to the mother intravenously. A dose is calculated for the mother's weight which is 50 to 100 times the weight of the fetus. The mother gets the anesthesia for each insertion of the dilators, twice a day. This induces brain death in a fetus in a matter of minutes. Fetal demise therefore occurs at the beginning of the procedure while the fetus is still in the womb."
Orrin Hatch points out that Planned Parenthood wasn't alone in lying about this. "In a June 23, 1995 submission to the House Judiciary Constitution Subcommittee, the late Dr. James McMahon, the other of the two doctors who had at the time admitted performing the procedure, wrote that anesthesia given to the mother during the procedure caused fetal demise," Hatch reminded Congress.

During testimony before the House Judiciary Committee in November 1995, Dr. Norig Ellison, president of the 32,000-member American Society of Anesthesiologists, said, "I believe this statement to be entirely inaccurate. I am deeply concerned, moreover, that the widespread publicity given to Dr. McMahon's testimony may cause pregnant women to delay necessary and perhaps life-saving medical procedures, totally unrelated to the birthing process, due to misinformation regarding the effects of anesthetics on the fetus." Dr. David Birnbach, Director of Obstetric Anesthesiology at St. Luke's Hospital in New York, said, "Every day we have pregnant patients who get anesthesia -- women who break their ankles, need knee surgery, have appendectomies, gallbladder removals, breast biopsies, and so on. Anesthetics done safely by an anesthesiologist do not do harm to either the mother or the baby." This crass and self-serving threat to the lives of pregnant women and their loved and wanted children should prove once and for all that the abortion establishment's antics can endanger even those who don't seek abortions. How long are we going to allow this to continue before we start holding them accountable for the damage they do?
