| An Inglewood Abortion Ordeal | |
In a series starting with last Wednesday's Feature, we began our look at Inglewood Women's Hospital Clinic Center What-have-you. On Friday we looked at the women who died after abortions at the Inglewood entity. On Monday we looked at the implications of Inglewood's infamous five-minute abortion. And this past Wednesday we looked at many years of documented violations by the Inglewood entity. Given what we've seen so far, it should come as no surprise that many women suffered injuries short of death from abortions at the Inglewood entity. Today we'll look at the case with the most detailed court documents, filed by a woman I'll call Latisha. Note: The Inglewood entity is Acme Reproductive Services 36 in Lime 5. Latisha said that she underwent an abortion by Dr. "Zumalt" (apparently Theresa Zumwalt; her name is misspelled on many documents) on January 14, 1988. As her attorney described it, "the anesthesia rushed in so fast she became tense and screamed frantically in pain, but the anesthesia took over and patient was out quickly." Latisha "awoke to a room full of doctors, (Nasrid, Zumalt & Barke) applying pressure to her body; she was hyperventilating and body was trembling, spastically uncontrollable." Latisha was kept on IV with nursing supervision. Zumalt told Latisha that the D&C abortion "went fine," and Zumalt and Barke asked her "What happened?" and said "You had us worried." Latisha was monitored, then discharged, with Ergovine for bleeding, in the care of a friend who took her home. Latisha was feeling weak, cramping and bleeding. Latisha was on bed rest January 15 - 17, and returned to work January 18, still experiencing bleeding & cramps. On January 28, Latisha "became faint - hyperventilating began along with body trembling sporadically." She was transported by ambulance to St. Luke's, given medication for hyperventilation, and released. January 25 through 28, Latisha was treated by her family practitioner for fever, bleeding, weakness, and hyperventilating. On January 29 she called her family doctor, and reported a 102 degree fever. Latisha was instructed to go to St. Luke's Medical Center. When Latisha arrived at St. Luke's, she was instructed to proceed immediately to Inglewood.
