One patient, "Nellie," told the Miami Herald that she went to Dadeland for a pregnancy test in 1989. They told her the test was positive, and she cried, but decided to have her abortion elsewhere because Dadeland "was really dirty and gross. I saw a big roach there." When she went to the other facility, they did their own pregnancy test, which came back negative. A physical exam verified that Nellie had not been pregnant.

As part of their undercover investigation, the Miami Herald sent 10 non-pregnant women to Dadeland for pregnancy tests. The tests were advertised as free, but the women were asked for "a donation, whatever you can afford."

Two of the non-pregnant women were told they tested positive for pregnancy. The other eight were told that their tests were negative but that it was "probably a false negative." One of the women, Susan, was asked if she could rush home and get cash for an abortion. Staff told her that she shouldn't wait, because if she waited until next week, the abortion would cost $450 instead of only $250. She was encouraged to go ahead with an abortion despite the negative pregnancy test because she was "probably pregnant, but either too far along or not far enough for the test to show positive."

The investigator Linda was examined by Scott Dunkin at the clinic. He told her, "There's nothing in there." Betty Eason suggested that Linda should submit to a $40 blood test for pregnancy. She offered to "hold" her $250 that she'd paid up front for an abortion. When Linda indicated that she did not want to have the abortion, Dadeland refunded only $175 of her money.

According to the Miami Herald, a woman identified as "E.B." said that "No one made sure she or of any other woman understood the long, dense forms. There was no counseling... and no one asked... if the women had freely chosen to terminate their pregnancy, if they had any concerns about going through with an abortion, or if they had any questions about the procedure." According to E.B.'s story, she was examined by Steve Silvers, but she stopped him as he reached for the instruments. Eason, who was present, reportedly told her, "It's a simple procedure. You saw the girls in the recovery room. They can go straight to lunch. They can go back to work this afternoon. It's just cleaning out the uterus. It's just cleaning out two periods. Many women who aren't even pregnant have it done so they can get pregnant."

When E.B. told Eason that she didn't want to hurt her baby, Eason told her, "What baby? There's no baby. There's just two periods there that will be cleaned out... Oh, you're pregnant. But there is no baby there. Get that out of your head. You know how much blood there is on the pad during your period? That little bit? Well, this will be twice as much. Two periods. And some water. If you don't terminate, then it will become a fetus, and after birth, then it will be a baby. ... You know, 'abort' just means to stop something. You can abort a plane flight." Eason insisted that E.B. was 8 - 10 weeks pregnant, and added, "I have to tell you that the longer you let this go, the more it is going to cost. Did you see the Spanish woman in there? I hope her husband can find another $400. They waited too long. When E.B. declined the abortion, she was refunded $175 of her $225 fee.
