In reviewing the cases of "Patient A" ("Anne") and "Patient B" ("Millie") the New York Medical Board had a few comments to make on Steve Brigham's high opinion of his own abilities.

The committee said that Brigham "has shown inexcusably bad judgment," committing negligence that not only seriously injured his patients but endangered their lives.

The committee also noted that Brigham "showed no hint that he understood he had made errors in judgment of extradorinary gravity." He was therefore unlikely, they concluded, to men his ways.

"Respondent repeatedly exaggerated his medical training, experience and skill." He "has demonstrated that he lacks appropriate judgment and insight as to his own limitations. he routinely displayed a tendency to inflate and embellish the truth."

The board noted that Brigham "regularly referred to himself as an emergency room physician." But Brigham had not had a residency in emergency medicine nor had he ever worked full-time in an emergency room. His "experience and training in emergency medicine consited of part-time positions in various emergency rooms."

Brigham also claimed "extensive training" in OB/GYN and abortion. "Respondent testified that his credential in abortion procedures arose from taking a formal course of study in abortion as offered by Planned Parenthood of New York City. However, he eventually admitted that he has never done a residency in OB/GYN. Moreover, Respondent later admitted that he did not complete the course in first trimester abortion practice offered by Planned Parenthood.... Eventually, Respondent testified that what he referred to as special training in preparation for his activities in the abortion field consisted of limited interludes of observation of other physicians."

Brigham had told the board that he didn't transfer Millie to a hospital in spite of her severe bleeding because "there is nothing 'magical' about a hospital; that he is an emergency room physician.... Furthermore, according to Respondent, he and his staff were giving Patient A more attention than she would get in an intensive care unit. Respondent's anser to this question and others evidences his inability to distinguish between mere attention and appropriate care."

The Board's committee concluded that Brigham was "under trained, has demonstrated grievous deviations from accepted standards of care and diligence, has shown submarginal abilities and has evidenced not the slightest recognition of any of his deficiencies."

The Committee concluded that they couldn't even recommend remedial training for Brigham due to his failure to grandiose overestimation of his own abilities. They recommended that his license be revoked.
