"Don't like abortions? Don't have one!" It makes a catchy slogan, but it ignores and belittles the ordeals suffered by women who've had safe and legal abortions inflicted on them without their knowledge or consent.

Karla W. visited the office of Dr. Robert Agee. He told her that she was 12 weeks pregnant, that the fetus had died, and that she was in the process of a miscarriage. Agee induced contractions to cause Karla to expel the fetus. But instead of the expected dead 12-week fetus, Karla gave birth to a little girl, weighing one pound, 15 ounces. The little girl, whom Karla named Lauren, was actually 27 weeks. Lauren died due to prematurity. Karla later was informed that had Agee not interfered with the pregnancy, Lauren could have been born term, and perfectly normal and healthy.

In June of 1979, Ms. W. entered a Philadelphia hospital to undergo a sterilization procedure to be performed by a Dr. Berger. Berger failed to perform a pregnancy test on Ms. W. prior to the procedure. During the surgery, Berger discovered that Ms. W. was pregnant, and aborted her fetus. Berger asserted that since Ms. W. already had six children, and had undergone three previous abortions, she'd have wanted an abortion anyway.

Dr. Rafel Cunanan Jr. voluntarily surrendered his New York medical license in the wake of numerous allegations, including performing unauthorized abortions on Patients A and B, who were having other procedures done. Cunanan had failed to determine that the patients were pregnant before starting the procedures, and simply aborted their fetuses upon realizing that he'd damaged them, without informing their mothers.

Ms. Smith, age 41, had been trying for many years to become pregnant. She went to Dr. Anthony Cuva for treatment for abdominal pain. Cuva recommended and performed a hysterectomy without first determining that Ms. Smith was pregnant. Ms. Smith's bladder was injured, and she suffered extreme emotional distress upon discovering that the fetus she'd tried so long to conceive had been destroyed.
