In a previous Feature, we looked at the Society of Centurions, founded with the help of Dr. Philip Ney. Originally founded to help abortionists in Eastern European countries, the Society of Centurions is supported by prolife leaders such as Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life. In more recent years, former abortion nurse Joan Appleton started a branch of the Society of Centurions in the United States.
In the next Feature, we looked at the need for time to heal from the wounds of working in abortion. In the next Feature, we looked at the web of lies needed to work in an abortion setting. Now we'll look at what leads folks into abortion to begin with.
Appleton says, "What we know - and it is extremely apparent in the abortion industry - is that there is a distinct difference between those women who have had abortions, the mothers who suffer from post-abortion trauma, and those of us who have actually been the killers, the executioners. That has to be dealt with. There is a reason why we killed."
Appleton said that although there have never been official statistics compiled, her work with former abortion workers has led her to conclude that "95 percent of us have been abused - emotionally, psychologically, physically, or sexually - as children." She, like Ney, believes that there is a correlation between the abuse they suffered as children and their subsequent involvement in destroying children through abortion.
In order to fully heal from participation in abortion, both Ney and Appleton stress, the former abortion worker has to deal with issues that pre-date their involvement in abortion. They have to go back to the victimization that led them into the cycle of despair that ended in an abortion facility. Then they are ready to face the reality of what they did as abortion workers, and to heal from that later trauma.
Ney told Father Pavone, "We have done a study, and we have spent time counseling people who have now stopped doing abortions. And both from the clinical observations and the data that we have collected, I think it is possible now to describe what happens both going in to the abortion industry and coming out of it. So what we have tried to do is provide people with a model that helps them understand why they got there and how best to get out of it if they want to get out of it."
Dr. Ney has written a book, The Centurion's Pathway, describing the journey from abortion participation to healing. He explains how the wounds of having been a victim of abuse often pave the way for a person to abuse others by practicing abortion.
Next, we'll look at how the Society of Centurions helps abortion workers on this journey from abuse to wholeness.
