Abortion Deaths
I include in this category deaths that exemplified the public mood of the time. Early in the century, women's abortion deaths typically led to arrests and attempts to crack down on abortionists. After legalization, families were left to the civil court system and could look for little help from law enforcement. Prosecution, which was once a given, became the exception rather than the rule.
One thing that you will notice as you look over these deaths is that there is little real difference between a legal abortion death and a criminal abortion death. The woman dying from a legal abortion has no real advantage over the woman dying from a criminal abortion death, unless you consider the current indifference of law enforcement to be an advantage. Abortion advocates, to judge from their writings, do consider the indifference of law enforcement to be progress. Women who refused to finger their abortionists were admired, police and doctors who attempted to identify the butcher who had fatally injured the woman were painted as monsters. How this demonstrates concern for the safety of women escapes me.
