Contrary to abortion advocacy beliefs, Roe didn't get rid of the quacks -- or the wannabe abortionists. An accupuncturist in Colorado tried to do an abortion and ended up sending his teenage patient to the hospital with fetal parts sticking out of her body.
Zhong Fu, 43, was charged with performing an illegal abortion, second-degree assault, theft, and a charge I don't understand called "pretended criminal abortion." Fu is free on $100,000 bond.
Fu allegedly charged the 25-weeks-pregnant 18-year-old patient $1,500. Two days later she was admitted to a Colorado Springs hospital, hemorrhaging and cramping. Locals say Fu "wanted to make easy money."
Fu said that the woman had threatened suicide, and that the fetus had already been dead, so he pretended to perform an abortion on her with herbs.
Local authorities believe that Fu has sold abortions to other women, and have asked them to come forward. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 24. If convicted of all four felony charges, Fu could serve a maximum of 22 years in prison.
Such non-physician abortionists have not vanished with Roe. When we investigated rumors that a chiropractor had been caught selling abortions in the Chicago area, we were able to find documentation of two chiropractors and a witch doctor:
Dr. Julius Leatherman, a chiropractor with suspended license, faced charges of performing two illegal abortions. A 21-year-old patient was injured in an abortion performed in November of 1975. A 26-year-old woman who was opposed to abortion said that she visited Leatherman and he performed a pelvic exam, told her she was pregnant, used instruments on her without getting consent or informing her what he was doing, then informed her abortion was complete. This woman bleed heavily 4 days, and was admitted to a hospital to complete the abortion and treat blood poisoning.

Dr. Howard White, a chiropractor who had failed his licensing test at least three times, and whose license had been suspended in 1976, charged a 16-year-old girl $250 for an abortion in 1977. She was 21 weeks pregnant and thought that White was a qualified physician because she'd been referred by a heavily advertised Chicago area abortion referral-for-fee organization. White used a corkscrew-like device on the girl, who was taken from his facility directly to the hospital to be treated for complications. She was hospitalized for 11 days and required a hyserectomy. White was sentenced for 1 to 3 years in prison.

Concepcion Rivera, a self-proclaimed witch doctor, was arrested for practicing medicine without a license while on 30 months probation for allegedly performing two abortions through witch doctor techniques.

Of course, these folks aren't the only non-physicians caught selling abortions since Roe. Alicial Hannah came close to the medical field in that she planned to become a dental hyginest. She is serving time for the abortion death of Angela Sanchez. Eugene Ralph Marrah posed as "Dr. Mike Morrison" under the supervision of Joseph Rucker at Snowden Medical Clinic and performed abortions. Marra was an ex-convict with outstanding arrest warrents.
