Abortionist Braemer Surrenders License

Dateline 6/23/00

Nicholas Braemer, owner and lead abortionist for a string of 10 facilities in southern California, will voluntarily surrender his license. The surrender is part of a negotiated settlement with the California medical board. The surrender goes into effect August 1.

Ownership of the abortion facilities will be transferred to another abortionist, who will continue Braemer's practice with one notable exception: he will not do the late abortions Braemer did between 24 and 26 weeks of pregnancy.

Braemer, who got his California license in 1966, was first placed on probation in 1983 after he was convicted of Medi-Cal fraud. He was placed on probation again in 1995 for a 1987 incident in which he sent an abortion patient home with retained fetal parts, causing infection.

Shades of Steir!

This second probation was still in effect when Braemer admitted gross negligence in a 1996 abortion which punctured a woman's uterus and seriously damaged her bowel. Braemer sent the injured woman home -- a move which could have killed her. She ended up hospitalized for a month and needed multiple surgeries to repair the damage. The woman sued Braemer but settled out of court.

The medical board was seeking to revoke Braemer's license over this incident, and to discipline him for a 1998 abortion that left the woman still pregnant. She underwent a second abortion later.

In September, medical board investigators went into four of Braemer's clinics and found that he was allowing untrained staff to perform pregnancy tests, and to perform ultrasounds and interpret the results to patients. This, according to the board, amounted to letting untrained people practice medicine without a license in his facilities.

Braemer told a reporter, "I chose not to fight it. I agreed to retire. I'm 60 years old, I'm financially OK. I'm ready to do other things."
