Turner's Syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the complete or partial absence of one of the X chromosomes. It causes short stature, sterility, and sometimes heart and kidney problems. Turner's Syndrome often causes unusual physical features such as webbing of the neck that are cosmetic and contribute to misconceptions about women and girls with Turner's Syndrome. Certain learning disabilities are also associated with Turner's Syndrome. Turner's Syndrome does not cause mental retardation.
Although Turner's Syndrome is most often diagnosed after a girl's growth patterns show abnormalities, it is sometimes detected in utero. Prejudice against genetic anomalies leads many parents to fear Turner's Syndrome and choose abortion. However, the manifestations of Turner's Syndrome are largely treatable, and girls with Turner's Syndrome can live full, satisfying lives. Some have even had babies with help from reproductive technologies such as in-vitro fertilization.
